In this episode of Modern Love: The Podcast, the actress Cherry Jones (“Transparent,” “Doubt”) reads the essay “Kept Together by the Bars Between Us,” about a marriage that is buttressed by a husband’s prison sentence.

The essay’s author, Amy Friedman, is a writer in Los Angeles. Her essay was adapted from the anthology “Stricken: The 5,000 Stages of Grief.”

Ms. Jones has been nominated for five Tony awards for best actress in a play, and won twice (“The Heiress” and “Doubt”). She also appeared in the television show “24,” delivering a performance that won an Emmy for supporting actress in a drama.
