In this episode of Modern Love: The Podcast, Sterling K. Brown (“The People v. O.J. Simpson”) reads the essay “My First Son, a Pure Memory,” in which a man share’s the story of his wife’s miscarriage.

You can listen using the player above, or find the episode on iTunes and Google Play Music.

The essay was written by David Hlavsa, a professor at St. Martin’s University. He is the author of “Walking Distance: Pilgrimage, Parenthood, Grief, and Home Repairs,” which follows his and his wife’s 400-plus-mile journey toward healing after the stillbirth of their first son.

Mr. Brown lends his voice to the essay. He will appear in the NBC series “This Is Us,” which premieres in September. Following Mr. Brown’s reading, Modern Love editor Dan Jones, Mr. Hlavsa and his wife, Lisa Holtby, share their thoughts on the piece.

You can see “Modern Love Live” at the Town Hall in Manhattan on Oct. 20.
