Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome Affecting Newborns at an Alarmingly High Rate

Every hour, at least one baby is born with a drug habit, according to a new U.S. study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, or JAMA. The number of babies suffering from drug withdrawal within the first hours of life tripled between the years 2000 and 2009, jumping to more than 13,000.
The problem of prescription painkiller addiction extends to newborn babies, who are increasingly filling the intensive care units of hospitals. A recent study shows that about one baby per hour is born addicted to highly-powerful opiates.
