Why does your library provide Internet access?

  • relate to your existing library mission statement
  • relate to other library policies already in place (behavior policies, collection policies, library equipment/computer policies)
  • relate to other library services/equipment already in place (photocopiers, reader-printers, library website)

Who will be able to use your library's Net workstations?

  • define different levels of patron access
  • reasons for the placement of library workstations
  • relate to existing patron privacy statements/policies

What Internet functions/tools/software does your library provide?

  • specific functions/tools/software (Netscape/IE, Acrobat, telnet, printing, email)
  • relate to similar library services you now provide

What Internet functions/tools doesn't your library provide?

  • specific functions (chat, listservs, email, ftp)
  • relate to similar library services you don't provide

What types of resources can patrons access/use?

  • does your library offer open or filtered Net access?
  • specific resources (educational sites, recreational sites)
  • relate to your existing collection development policy
  • legal disclaimers on Net content accuracy and content responsibility

What types of resources can't patrons access/use?

  • specific resources (adult sites, online shopping sites, gambling sites)
  • cite local-state laws/legal opinions, as appropriate

How do you expect patrons to behave?

  • list Netiquette behaviors
  • password/account behaviors (password security, sign-up sheets, parental consent forms)
  • time limits for Net computers
  • printing limits/costs
  • description of behaviors related to computer hardware/software
  • Behavior/netiquette training sessions/printed guides available to patrons

What help/training will your library staff provide to patrons?

  • courses, online tutorials, point-of-use guides, books, real-time assistance (netiquette, computer ethics, copyright, plagiarism, floppies, virus protection, chat, common sense safety tips)
  • relate to existing library privacy, copyright, intellectual freedom, harassment statements/policies

What help/training won't your library staff be able to provide to patrons?

How will library staff enforce your IUP?

  • procedures for patrons using the Net (time limits, printing costs/limits, sign-up sheets, parental consent forms)
  • how library staff will monitor patron use (or not monitor use)
  • how library staff will handle problems
  • sanctions (in incremental steps)
