The term "marijuana" became popular in the 1930's. Prior to this decade, most commonly the words used were either hemp or cannabis. The word "marijuana" was a Mexican slang term with the origin in the word maraguanquo. This word means "intoxicating" plant. As Mexicans immigrated into the states with cannabis, the term started to get popular and at the time was spelled "marihuana".
